Are you tired of those annoying holes in your favorite jeans? Have no fear! With just a few materials, you can easily patch them up. Follow some simple steps to give your jeans a fresh start. This guide will teach you how to use fabric. It also explains how to use Heat ‘n Bond to create a stylish DIY iron on patch.
Materials Needed
Fabric: Choose a fabric that compliments your jeans. Denim, cotton or a patterned fabric (like the one in the picture) work great.
Heat ‘n Bond: This is a double-sided adhesive that will secure your DIY iron on patch.
Note: An alternative is to use a pre-made patch that already has an adhesive back.

Scissors: For cutting the fabric, patch and thread (if used).
Iron: To apply Heat ‘n Bond.
Sewing Machine OR Needle and Thread: Optional…for added durability.
Instructions
Prepare the Area
Lay your jeans on a flat surface. Make sure the area around the hole is clean and free of any dirt.
Cut the Fabric for patch
Cut a piece of fabric larger, ideally greater than one inch, than the hole on all sides. This will ensure that the patch has enough coverage.
Apply Heat ‘n Bond
Cut a piece of Heat ‘n Bond that matches the size of your fabric.
Following the manufacturers instructions, place the Heat ‘n Bond on the back of your fabric. You want the textured side of the Heat ‘n Bond against the back (wrong side) of your fabric. You will typically need to iron it on a low setting without steam for about 10 seconds. I like to put a flour sack towel over my patch. This protects it from direct contact and keeps my iron’s surface safe from overhanging adhesive.
Remove excess Heat ‘n Bond with scissors.

Position the DIY Patch
Peel off the backing of the Heat ‘n Bond. Position your fabric DIY patch over the hole in your jeans. Press it down firmly.
Iron on the DIY Patch
Use your iron to apply heat to the DIY patch for about 30 seconds. This ensures it adheres well to the jeans. Make sure to cover the entire patch. I keep moving my iron constantly. This prevents burning or melting if the iron is too hot.
Optional Sewing

For extra durability, you can sew around the edge of the patch. Use your artistic freedom! You can use a sewing machine and do a zig zag or a straight stitch around edge. Alternatively, you can use your needle and thread and hand sew around the edge. It is more time consuming, but I find it relaxing!
Final Touches
Trim any excess fabric or threads, and your patched jeans are ready to wear!
Tips for a Successful Patch
- Choose Fun Fabrics: Use contrasting colors for fun patterns for stylish look.
- Experiment with Shapes: Don’t be afraid to cut your patch into unique shapes or sizes!
- Wash with Care: When washing your patched jeans, turn them inside out to protect the patch. It’s always best for fabrics to let them hang or air dry instead of using a dryer. This is especially true with fabric that already has vulnerability and an adhesive.
Patching your jeans with fabric and Heat ‘n Bond is a practical solution for holes. It is also a fun way to express your creativity. Enjoy your newly patched jeans, and happy crafting.
