Body Positivity VS Neutrality: What’s the difference?

Body positivity and neutrality are two ways to think about how you see yourself. Each one has its own meaning.

Body positivity is a good movement that encourages accepting all body shapes, sizes, genders, and skin tones. It says that beauty standards we see on social media are not realistic. It encourages us to love ourselves. However, there are some things to think about.

Inclusivity

Some people say the body positive movement doesn’t show everyone. A lot of Instagram posts with body positive hashtags show mostly young, white, and able-bodied women. This doesn’t show the experiences of all kinds of people.

Health Concerns

Now, this is where I start get heated. But KEEP READING, I pull it all together in the end.

Some experts worry that body positivity may not discuss the health problems that can come with carrying extra weight. It may also not address issues related to obesity. However, being shamed or stigmatized because of weight can also hurt our mental and physical health. It’s important to find a balance between these two ideas.

Body Neutrality

Body neutrality is different from body positivity. The focus is on not judging your body. Body neutrality says your body’s abilities are more important than how it looks. It doesn’t focus on beauty and says your body isn’t what makes you valuable.

My Thoughts Body Positivity vs Neutrality

I personally had a hard time finding the value in neutrality vs positivity, until I came across the following quote…

“Your value is not tied to your body nor does your happiness depend on what you look like. A body-positive approach says you are beautiful no matter what. Period.”

Selfie, value yourself no matter what you look like

What matters most is how you see body positivity. To me, it’s not just about size. It’s about celebrating all bodies, no matter their color, abilities, or changes. It’s about accepting and loving every shape and form.

Body positivity is very important to me. It helps me take care of my body. When I like how I look, I feel better in my body and mind. I know it’s important to find what works for you, especially if you have mental health problems like me.

Body positivity has helped many people feel better about themselves. It’s important to understand what it is and what it’s not. But we can’t forget that it’s important for our mental health and well-being.

What are your thoughts on body positivity vs neutrality?
